1. THE HISTORICAL PROCESSING OF CASTELLAMMARE BISCUITS

For four generations the Cascone family has been producing and passing on the tradition of biscuits: it is a point of reference for the memory of the territory. It is important to remember and pass on the knowledge of the production of biscuits and the social value and local stories connected to this product. It is also important, in order to keep this memory alive, to involve the population and visitors through cooking workshops and events related to the excellence of the area and its stories.

2. PACCHIANELLE AND MEMORY IN SCHOOLS

The Stabia Epiphany procession was made up of girls and young women dressed in traditional peasant costumes and therefore called Pacchianelle. Before the Christmas break, the teachers and school children with the help of their parents re-proposed a revisited version of the procession that paraded through the streets of the district. It was possible to create a network between schools that brings their memory back to life through teachers and parents, transmitted to children through the parade.

3. EVA AND THE MEMORY OF THE PATHS

As a girl Eva often walked on the paths of Faito, experiencing the different landscapes and paths. After living abroad she decided to return to her original landscapes. This memory can be valorised through reliving the trails of the Faito, telling the beauty and transmiting the memory of all the experiences in the nature of this magnificent park: memories of all the walks and moments of sociality lived on the Faito. It is possible to create paths through the park based on the narration of the locals, inviting tourists, travelers and walkers to experience the memory of Faito.

4. THE MEMORY OF WATER

Castellammare is rich in spring waters: they have marked the history of the area and the gesture of collecting water from the sources is still rooted in people. Collecting, drinking and sharing the different kind of waters and experiencing the fountains is a value for people, connected to family and social memories and habits. The memory could be valorised through the promotion of the fountains and the different waters of the territory. For example, by creating visit itineraries and water tasting events, together with the locals who tell the benefits and stories of the territory.

5. THE MUSIC THAT COMBINES MEMORIES

The Cassa Armonica is a symbolic place of the city: artistic heritage, meeting place and in the history place of exhibition of many artists. It is important to recover the memory of the many artists who have made this place alive and
give space to both historical artists and new musicians to perform and connect with the local memory. This memory could be valorised by creating a thematic Podcast on music, involving the artists to tell their experiences and performances in Castellammare as well as to listen to their songs.

6. THE DISPUTED MEMORY OF ROVIGLIANO

In front of this rock lives the memory of the contention of the Madonna Bruna, experienced by the various inhabitants of the small neighboring towns. The contest is relived every year through a very popular historical performance, as the event is deeply rooted in local memory. The memory could be valorised through sport, promoting the playful value of contention: organizing popular sports competitions in the historic day that recall the value of contention.

7. CIRO THE FISHERMAN AND THE BROWN MADONNA

“The Brown Virgin” is a bond made up of memories and devotion of a people who for centuries have found in her the strength to go on despite the difficulties, especially the fishermen. Local memory from 1822 tells that the Madonna
saved the local population from Vesuvius, and for this reason it is celebrated every 22 October: a lively festival of the memories of the inhabitants. The memory could be valorised through a documentary that from the tales of fishermen and the local population rediscovers and tells the deep link between tradition legend, memories, sea, belief and hope.

8. FUOCARAZZO – THE BURNING MEMORY

On 7 December, to celebrate the Madonna, bonfires were lit around the town, and in the days before, singers on the street invited people. It is important to connect the tradition of bonfires with the revitalisation of the waterfront, telling the memories of the singers and their tales of nights in the city. In order to valorise the memory, it is possible to create a bonfire festival on the waterfront, promoted in the streets of the city with the voices of the population that recalls the tradition of the singers.

9. THE PUPPETS MEMORIES

The creation of puppets and shows is a centuries- old tradition that involves artisans, actors and the memories of old children who remember their smiles together. Play and creativity are a value of sharing and collective memory, for all the generations who have lived them, which is transmitted in the tradition of puppets. In order to valorise the memory it is important that the Puppets festival becomes an event to involve artists and population, promote a tradition but also to share intergenerational memories.

10. STORYTELLING OF THE CHAMPIONS TO INVOLVE YOUNG PEOPLE

Rowing is part of the history of Castellammare: many world champions have grown up here and remember the value of sport in their experience. The memories of the champions have lived and still live here. There is a heritage of experiences for the narration of the territory through maritime sports clubs. It is important to create meetings and training shared between school teenagers, sports clubs and great champions becomes a way to transmit memories, passion and give local children a chance.
